“Ouch,” I yelled.

“It wouldn’t hurt so much if you stayed still,” Grim said, followed by the tink of a bullet dropping in a metal bowl.

I wrapped my hands tighter around the chair I was sitting backward in.

After the shooting, Timothy showed up, in a whirlwind of damage control. He had ushered us out, for which I was actually grateful. Grim insisted I come up to his penthouse, and since I was woozy from blood loss, I didn’t fight him. Now I was sitting at his kitchen bar while he played Operation with me. I even yelped like in the kid’s game when he dug around too much.

My body had pushed most of the bullets out again before the skin knitted closed. Cool vampire trick. But there were a few that hadn’t quite made their way out and were now trapped just under the freshly healed skin. They itched like hell. I’d had to take off my shirt and face away from Grim so he could extract the last couple slugs.

Grim ran a finger under my bra strap. His tone was hesitant. “There is another here, but it will be difficult to get out with this still over it.” I felt the bullet as he pressed against it.

I swallowed. The pain receded as a fire started in my belly. Five minutes ago, peeling off my shirt and getting cut up seemed medically sound. But now, an ache thrummed between my legs, while a sense of vulnerability skated across my skin at the prospect of being even more exposed.

Why should I feel more exposed now? I’d already broken down and begged him to kiss me. Not to mention I shared my deepest darkest secrets about my past with Grim. I wasn’t sure why I’d told him, either. It wasn’t in my nature to conceal things, but I didn’t walk around volunteering that personal shit.

It was dark, heavy, and I kept it locked in a steel box, wrapped in chains, put it inside a metal chest, and then threw it in the ocean that was the recesses of my mind.

The very second after I’d shared with him, I wanted to bite back the words.

Grim had studied me so intently, I could feel the heat of his possessive fury. I knew in that moment he was a hair away from hunting down my uncle and killing him, igniting both my fear and desire.

Fear because I didn’t want to stir up things from the past. And desire because no one had wanted to take care of me the way Grim seemed to always want to do.

Grim was slow to unhook my bra, giving me ample time to change my mind. I bit my lip as the last band of flesh was revealed to him. The straps hung useless at my sides.

The tip of his knife dug into my skin, but this time, the pain was second to the erotic thoughts now tumbling through my mind.

Tink.

He ran his fingers on either side of the wound. “There, it’s already healing.
